SIBO Soothe and Manage Program
Kristy Regan
SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. This is a 4-phase program based on a modified low-FODMAP approach. FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. They are active molecules that are in some cases unabsorbed, fermenting in the gut causing distension, discomfort, gas, bloating or diarrhea. A diet high in FODMAPs may impair gut function and may cause bacterial overgrowth. In this plan you will be introducing new foods phase by phase. As you begin this program, listen to your body in the form of symptoms (or their improvement). If you progress through the phases with manageable symptoms, that's awesome! If not you can always go back to the Soothing Phase, or to phase 1 or 2, for a longer amount of time if more healing is needed, before adding greater food diversity. This Soothing Phase is intended for those who have unmanageable symptoms and need first to calm their system. For those who use the Soothing phase as the first one, you will then move on to Phase 1. You will need to journal your diet. Write down all the foods you eat and any symptoms you present. This information will help you identify foods causing trouble to make the necessary restrictions and substitutions.
